Can anyone say beach?

We are heading to North Myrtle Beach on Saturday for a much anticipated family vacation.  This will be the third year to do this and we can’t wait.  We love going during the first week of September because all the kids are back to school and things there are peaceful and quite.  Yes, Emma has started school this year but she’s already missing some days.  We just decided that we are not going to let the public school dictate our family times together.  We are respectful of it but it won’t hold us back.  Dave is gone all summer so it’s special to be able to find time at the end of the summer travel to get together with our extended family.

I can’t wait to sit and watch the ocean, hear the waves put me to sleep at night, ride the lazy river for hours each day, walk the beach, build sand castles with the girls, play an outlandish amount of putt putt, have some fun date nights with my hubby and sister and brother in law.

Here is a picture from our first year at the beach in 2006.  I was major prego at the time…oh my!  But look at this clan.  We have a lot of fun together.

And last year, floating on the lazy river…..  One of the funniest memories was seeing great papa get on the lazy river and flip.  Well funny for us watching but not funny for him.

I’ll fill you in next week on our daily activities.  But until then, I’ve got to go and pack for vacation!  Oh yeah…stay away hurricanes please!

The joy of friends

Dave and I went to the mountains last weekend with some of our friends.  It was a very quick trip but we always love getting together.  I love to be around fun people.  And I must say I believe Dave and I have some very fun friends.  After dinner last Saturday night we went walking the streets of Gatlinburg.  That was an experience.  There are some very weird people in TN! 🙂  As we walked we noticed that there were so many of the air brush t-shirt shops.  We all split up and went our own ways but as we gathered to head back for the night two people were sporting new shirts.  Can you guess who?  Leslie and Norris.  I asked Wendy if I could post this picture.  She said that as long as I put a line in here about how she joked about it as she saw it in the window and the next thing she knows her husband is buying it.  I think it is ending up in one of his drawers.  Lets hope so.  But bottom line, it was fun to have a great laugh. I kind of left wishing Dave had gotten one for himself!

We had our second home study appointment today.  It went great.  Just another step down the road in this very long process.

Dave’s family is on town for the week and we’ve just been really busy.

Not a total failure.

All you non cooks – thanks for the support on my last post.  I don’t feel so alone anymore.

However I”m not a total failure.  Our house guests arrived this afternoon and for dinner I am serving chicken on the grill, baked potatoes, and corn on the cob.  I figured I could go big the first night and then take a few nights off! 🙂

Joy in the middle of life

I must say this has been one of the best summers that Dave and I have had as a married couple and during his busy travel season.  I was wondering what has been different than years past last night and I think I came to the conclusion that it’s because we are both maximizing our time right now in our sweet spots.  Dave has been having an incredible summer of ministry but he has said that it’s been the most tired he has ever been.  He’s had more conversations and interaction with people this summer during the day than ever before.  He’s thankful for that because he loves intersecting into  peoples lives and stories.  But it’s tiring for sure.

Me, I’m exhausted as well.  But a good exhausted.  I’ve been slammed at the Wayfarer office.  It’s an amazing dance that I do trying to keep up with three guys and all the details/flights/contacts.  And I’m reminded too often of a missed detail here and there but I’m giving it my all and finding so much joy in my job.  And our adoption journey… I think it’s kept me up way too late at night.  Right now there is always something to do and as the sun sets and I’m ready to call it a night, there are so many things that I am behind in and I just need to keep going.  But it’s so good.  And I’ve had some incredible conversations in the past few weeks with other people and their desires and journeys.  Amazing conversations and I just love it.  I’ve found so much Joy in this journey so far.  Did I say that I love it?

So at the end of the day when Dave and I finally get to have a decent conversation in, he’s sharing about his joy and I’m sharing about my joy and it honestly has created a wonderful bond in us that we have yet to experience in our 10 years of marriage.  Again, we are a part but so united in all the aspects of what God is calling us to do each and every day.  We are a team in every way and I must say that I love this team that is. It has been an amazing summer.

I mean, if it were me…I’d stay in bed until someone had to drag me out.  My kids.  7am and ready to go every single day of the week.  Sleep.  don’t they understand what a wonderful thing it is?

Happy 4th of July everyone.  We are heading to my mom and dad’s this afternoon for a cookout and pool time and then tonight we’ll catch the fireworks where do every year at Horizon Church.  Best fireworks around here.  I dare to say they are even better than downtown Greenville.

Thanks to everyone who gave, sacrificed, served and even died for giving us the freedom we have.  What a priviledge to live in a country that is free.

A family weekend

We have had such a wonderful “family weekend.”  Dave got home late Friday night and the girls we so excited to see daddy sleeping in our bed when they woke up Saturday morning.  We had lots of morning laughs yesterday as the level of energy around here was at it’s max.  We headed off to an early lunch in Greenville and enjoyed our favorite pizza place and then walked to get our ice cream.  Izzie was back home in time for a nap while Emma enjoyed a dip in Nana’s pool.

Last night “Uncle Vegas” aka David Reichley came over to watch the girls while Dave and I headed out for a date.  David is Courtney’shusband.  Courtney  and the kids are currently up in Pittsburgh with her family and David is here working.  He’s a big famiy guy and it’s funny watching him not to know what to do with himself as his family is away.  So he’s offering to come and hang out with our kids.  He’s crazy but we really enjoyed getting a date night.

When we got home all three of us watched “The Great Debaters.” What a great moving that was.  Dave and I really enjoyed it.  It’s amazing all the stories out there that have never been told.  Did I mention we really enjoyed this movie?

Tomorrow, Dave heads back out to camp.  This time he will be at a Student Life for Kids camp in Talledega, AL.  He is taking Emma with him.  She has been talking about “camp with dad” since last summer.  When she came home last summer she looked like this….  Needless to say she can’t wait to get on the road tomorrow!

Dixie Crossroads

There is one place in the USA that I would dare to say holds on their menu one of my favorite meals.  It’s a little place called Dixie Crossroads.  They have the world famous Rock Shrimp.  I swear it tastes like small bites of Lobster.  I have been known to throw back 4 dozen in one sitting.  Today I just had one dozen since their prices seemed to have jumped just a bit from the last time we were there.  But I savored every bite! So if you are ever passing through Titusville, FL make the stop and you won’t regret it!

Izzie is not sure of what to make of the Rock Shrimp!:

This is Rock Shrimp… I know but it’s really good…I promise!
