So for you parents out there…. Izzie has a terrible cough. She is waking herself up as I type right now from coughing. So much has been on the news about cough medicine for kids under 2 and how it does more harm than good. I have not given her anything. Is that what I am supposed to do or would you go ahead and give her some stuff? I gave it to Emma all the time but now seem confused as to what the best thing to do is. Suggestions?
Cough Medicine?

nope, I wouldn’t do it — too many bad comments about it….maybe the hot steam or cold (which ever they told you) — or maybe make it through the night and call the doc in the morning —
I wouldn’t give her any meds! I get Doc happy and take the girls before doing anything.
Hope she gets to feeling better!
Thanks ladies! I did not give her anything last night and she seemed better this morning. If she keeps it up I’ll head to the DR. Good to get the ear of other moms!
I was scared to do that too a couple of weeks ago and my doctor (and nurse) told me that the scare is because – believe it or not – there are a lot of parents out there that give too much in the dosage to “help” things along. She said if you’re giving the right dosage, you’ll be fine. I called them anyway just to see if they recommended it. Remember, there are plenty of moms out there that will give their kids benadryl to knock them out on a long road trip, etc. Same principal applies…if they don’t really need it, why are you giving it to them?
Thanks for all the advice. I just loved getting some blog love and comments. I should ask people to respond more often! Izzie is still under the weather but we are making it through!
all my kids have survived!! i am not a paranoid parent by any means with all of the stuff in the news. i agree with the other comment about right dosage with the right amount of time in between. the government and drug companys are covering their booty!! i rarely give mine cough meds during the day but definitely at nighti i will gernerally give mine the night time cough just so they can rest. when they are not resting well it is harder for them to get better. during the day you can give her a teaspoon or 2 of something that has caffine in it (this is old school but it works) like flat coke or a little tea. most of the high power cough meds like albuterol have it in there!!
This may sound crazy but it works. Rub some Vick’s (the greasy kind in the blue container) on the bottom of her feet, and put socks on your child. This will help ease the coughing through the night without worrying about cough medicine and side effects. My son has asthma and this method has really helped us get through some tough nights of coughing. My grandma recommended this to me and I though she was crazy, so I looked it up on the internet and sure enough it was there as a cough remedy. Good Luck!
